Week 16 Overview
Week 16 served up another gripping round of Premier and Division One football, with icy temperatures and heavy recent rain doing little to dent the quality on show. Teams battled across well-prepared pitches, and spectators were treated to resilient defending, decisive finishing and late drama. Oldfields strengthened their title charge, Tuns and Charlie Bassetts produced a thriller, and Division One saw honours shared in a tactical chess match.
Premier Division
Oldfields vs Tean Rangers — 3–0
Oldfields arrived with intent and delivered one of their most commanding performances of the season. On a bitterly cold morning — and on a pitch that impressively passed inspection — they flew out of the blocks.
Tom Lowe set the tone from the first whistle. Constantly harassing the Tean back line, he broke the deadlock early, beating the offside trap and slotting low into the bottom corner. The pressure didn’t stop there: Oldfields struck the woodwork four times in the first half and Tean struggled to create anything at the opposite end.
The second came on 32 minutes — a superb cross-field ball from Rob Thorley created space for Lowe, who finished confidently to double both his tally and Oldfields’ lead.
The pattern continued after the break, with Oldfields dominating while Tean looked to exploit the wings through Joe Price and Adnir Junior. However, full-back Evan Richardson won the duel repeatedly, shutting down Tean’s counterattacking outlet.
The result was sealed late on: Greg Large whipped in a dangerous delivery and Adam Harper finished at the back post from five yards to make it 3–0.
A physical but fair contest saw no cards issued, with the referee calling it “the easiest game I will have all season.”
Oldfields leap to 2nd place, and momentum is firmly with them.
Tuns vs Charlie Bassetts — 3–2
A match that had everything: chances, momentum swings and a goal worthy of winning any game.
Tuns started fast on a well-prepared surface, taking the lead after 12 minutes when Roik latched onto a through ball, rounded the keeper and scored from a tight angle. But misfortune struck shortly after — a long ball forward caused confusion in the Tuns back line, and a defensive clearance rebounded off Stott and rolled over the line to bring Bassetts level.
A deadly counterattack put Bassetts 2–1 up on 26 minutes, with Farrington racing clear and finishing from the edge of the box. Tuns hit back quickly, though — Boot showed brilliant footwork inside the area, skipping past two challenges before drilling low through Cummings’ legs.
HT: 2–2, and it was anybody’s game.
The second half brought fewer chances overall, but tension stayed high. Tuns controlled possession while Bassetts defended deep and waited to spring forward. With 15 minutes to go, Boot produced the defining moment: a first-time strike from 25 yards, arrowing into the bottom corner — unstoppable.
FT 3–2, and Tuns remain 4th with their push for a top-spot finish very much alive.
Division One
Cheadle SMU vs Sudbury — 1–1
A cold but sunny morning set the stage for a fixture defined by organisation and work rate rather than flowing attacking play.
Both teams started brightly, keeping the ball well but struggling to carve out scoring opportunities. Sudbury eventually found the breakthrough shortly before half-time — a flicked near-post corner dropped perfectly for Andy Matthews, who powered a header past the rooted Cheadle goalkeeper.
Trailing at the break, Cheadle began the second half with attacking purpose. They moved the ball confidently from midfield and forced pressure without quite creating clear-cut chances. Their equaliser finally came from a corner and a crowded penalty area — the ball fell favourably to Will Dobbie, who reacted quickest to prod home from close range and claim his 10th of the season.
Both sides aggressively pushed for a winner late on, but neither found the decisive moment.
A draw felt fair on balance, with both clubs leaving frustrated not to take all three points, yet relieved not to leave empty-handed.
